The Tribe brings you: City Lights

City Lights Project will bring illuminated art to the dark, back streets of BurningMan.

StreetSign
Ye Olde Street Sign
On the playa, the corner sign posts identify the roads and pedestrian walkways. These utilitarian sign posts are useful in navigating the city by day.  At night these Sign posts are a hazard for being unlighted.    By installing unique solar-powered light sculptures on the sign posts, City Lights will make them distinctive artistic landmarks and will illuminate them during the night.

The result will offer an enriched experience for citizens of Black Rock City and provide night time wayfaring on the playa.  As a meeting place (meet me at the corner with the baked potato light)  To know where they are (ah, I must be near my camp, there's that bacon light thing)   Note: Baked potato and bacon lights are used as examples and may not be part of City Lights. We will do our best to persuade someone to make them.

City Lights Project will put solar-powered light sculptures on 50 corner street signs.  Not 50 of the same sculpture, but 50 unique sculptures by multiple artists. Volunteers in Europe, Canada, Japan and the United Sates are ready to gather participants in the project by using their personal networks and by recruiting at regional Burning Man events.

This will also allow people who can not attend this year to participate.  Former burners and armchair burners can now be a part of the burn without going to the desert.

The City Lights Project will provide artists from around the world a basic solar light fixture.  They will then transform it into their own light sculpture. The worldwide scope of this project allows people who cannot travel to Black Rock City (due to financial, family, or work related responsibilities) the ability to participate in the Burning Man festival.

The individual artists create their own light sculpture with their own materials.  The Project team will distribute the basic solar light kit,  collect the finished sculpture and install them on the Playa.

Basic Light Kit
Standard light kit - Solar panel+battery, strand of LED
lights, and custom mounting bracket.
Materials will consist of  a basic solar light fixture and any additional materials will be supplied at the discretion of the artist, with the following requirements: materials must be mostly recycled or re-purposed, resilient to physical abuse by wind and man, and not create MOOP.

The sculptures will be attached to the existing street corner signs by the installation crew. This same crew will remove the lights at the end of the event. A small pickup truck will act as a mobile installation platform.

FAQ

Q: Will the Project supply or pay for my materials?
A:  Sorry no.  We recommend recycled and reused material.

Q: What should I make the Sculpture out of?
A:  The Playa will be windy, dusty and occasionally wet.   We encourage you to use materials that can stand up to the windy and wet conditions.     Fabric, Paper Mache, wood and  plastic are good materials to use.

Q: Will you modify my Art?
A:  We will endeavor to install your Art as is.  We may reinforce your art with a varnish or other invisible materials to ensure that the Art is not damaged by the natural forces.

Q:  Do I get my Art back after the event?
A:  Yes,  by picking the art up from our Los Angeles home.   Or by having us ship the art work back.  You will have to pay for shipping.

Q: Can I cut and drill into the Solar Light?.
A:  Yes, the plastic housing can be drilled into or glued  or modified to support your Art work.

Q: Do I have to use the metal bracket?
A: No,   The light Sculpture must be supported on the wooden street post, but you may create your own bracket .
